A Mixed Stabilized Finite Element Formulation for Strain Localization Analysis
نویسنده
چکیده
This work exploits the concept of stabilization techniques to improve the behaviour of either mixed or p u / mixed u / ε linear/linear triangular elements when strain localization analysis is required. Different stabilization methods suitable for either Mode-I or Mode-II structural failure are proposed and compared to check the global stability of the corresponding discrete finite element formulation. Both elasto-J2-plastic and isotropic damage models have been used for the constitutive behaviour of the material. In both cases, exponential softening has been introduced in the post-peak regime. The results obtained do not suffer from spurious mesh-size or mesh-bias dependence, comparing very favorably with those obtained with standard approach.

Explicit mixed strain-displacement finite elements for compressible and quasi-incompressible elasticity and plasticity
This paper presents an explicit mixed finite element formulation to address compressible and quasi-incompressible problems in elasticity and plasticity. This implies that the numerical solution only involves diagonal systems of equations. The formulation uses independent and equal interpolation of displacements and strains, stabilized by variational subscales (VMS). A displacement sub-scale is ...

The development of slip lines, due to strain localization, is a common cause for failure of soil in many circumstances investigated in geotechnical engineering. Through the use of numerical methods -like finite elementsmany practitioners are able to take into account complex geometrical and physical conditions in their analyses. However, when dealing with shear bands, standard finite elements d...

This paper presents the application of a stabilized mixed strain/displacement nite element formulation for the solution of nonlinear solid mechanics problems involving compressible and incompressible plasticity. The variational multiscale stabilization introduced allows the use of equal order interpolations in a consistent way. Such formulation presents two advantages when compared to the stan...

Displacement finite element models of various beam theories have been developed traditionally using conventional finite element basis functions (i.e., cubic Hermite, equi-spaced Lagrange interpolation functions, or spectral/hp Legendre functions). Various finite element models of beams differ from each other in the choice of the interpolation functions used for the transverse deflection w, tota...

This paper exploits the concept of stabilized finite element methods to formulate stable mixed stress/displacement and strain/displacement finite elements for the solution of nonlinear solid mechanics problems. The different assumptions and approximations used to derive the methods are exposed. The proposed procedure is very general, applicable to 2D and 3D problems and independent of the const...
